Things to Consider When Searching for the Right Living Situation
Rhonda Dimperio, RN, BSN
Finding the right living situation for your loved one is a daunting task and frequently is an urgent situation. An educated consumer is the best consumer. Things to consider are:
1. Although most facilities will initially want to make an appointment, you should also be able to drop in unannounced. Never being allowed to drop in to visit may not be a good sign.
2. Physical appearance is important, but don’t be distracted by frills.
3. Staff should be friendly, introduce you to the residents and answer questions about the environment.
4. Request to see current licenses and state surveys. Note if any and all deficiencies were corrected.
5. Talk to the residents about their experience in the facility. Are they clean and well cared for?
6. Ask for references, not only from current residents and/or their families, but professional references as well.
7. Talk to the staff about the working conditions. What is the staff to resident ratio? What is the staff turnover rate? What kind of initial and ongoing training do they receive?
8. Ask to see menus and the activity schedule.
9. Note the smell and appearance of the facility. If there is a foul odor throughout the environment, that may be cause for concern.
10. Ask about the prices. Do they have any add on costs and if so, make sure these are clearly identified.
11. Assessments should be done on all potential residents prior to admission to assure your loved one can be cared for appropriately in the setting.
12. Do not hesitate to ask as many questions as needed. You need to advocate for your loved one on every level.
